SEO Marketing: Where Search Fits in the Rest of It

SEO is one channel among several, and it behaves differently from the others. This page covers what it is good at, what it is bad at, and how to size it against everything else you are spending on.

What's included

  • An honest comparison of search against paid ads, social and email on cost, speed, durability and intent.
  • Search demand research that tells you whether your market looks for what you sell.
  • A channel mix recommendation, including cases where SEO should not be your first investment.
  • Content that earns its keep in more than one channel instead of being written for Google alone.
  • Attribution set up so you can see what organic search contributes, instead of assuming.

Who this is for

Marketing managers and owners deciding where next year's budget goes, and businesses currently spending on ads who suspect they are renting an audience they could own.

Frequently asked

What is SEO marketing?

Using organic search as a marketing channel: earning visibility for the searches your customers already make, instead of buying it. It differs from other channels in one important way. The audience arrives already looking for what you sell, which is why it converts better than almost anything else, and it takes months to build, which is why it is rarely the fastest option.

Is SEO better than paid advertising?

They do different jobs. Ads buy you position today and stop the day you stop paying. SEO takes months and then keeps working. Most businesses that can afford both should run both, using ads to learn which searches convert and SEO to own those searches permanently.

How much of my marketing budget should go on SEO?

It depends on whether search demand exists for what you sell, which keyword research answers in a few days. Where demand is strong, a meaningful ongoing share is justified because the asset compounds. Where it is thin, we will say so instead of take the budget.

How does SEO work with social media?

Different points in the buying process. Social builds awareness among people who were not looking. Search captures people who now are. Content written properly serves both, and social sharing can earn the links that help search.

Does SEO help email marketing?

Indirectly and quite reliably. Organic traffic is a strong source of list signups because the visitor arrived with a problem you can help with. The same content can carry both.

How long before SEO contributes to pipeline?

Expect early signals within three to six months and meaningful contribution across six to twelve. Budget it as an investment with a delayed return rather than a monthly cost with monthly output.

What is the ROI of SEO?

It improves over time, which makes single-month figures misleading. The useful comparison is the cost per organic visit over a year against what the same visit would cost through paid search for the same keyword. That gap is where the return sits, and it widens as the earlier work keeps paying.

How do I measure SEO against other channels?

Conversions from organic search in Google Analytics, tracked against the same conversion definition you use for every other channel. Set that up before you start, because retrofitting attribution is painful.

Should a new business start with SEO?

Rarely as the only channel, because you will need enquiries before SEO matures. Start the SEO work early since it takes time, and run paid alongside it to keep the pipeline alive meanwhile.

Is content marketing the same as SEO?

Overlapping but not identical. Content marketing is about producing something worth reading. SEO is about making sure it can be found and is aimed at something people search for. Content without SEO goes unread. SEO without content has nothing to rank.

Do I need a marketing agency as well as an SEO agency?

Not necessarily. We cover search and paid search. Brand, design and broader campaign work is outside what we do, and we would rather say so than take on work we would do adequately at best.
