What this checks

Google and the AI answer engines both try to establish that a business is a real, identifiable entity before trusting it. That verification runs on connections: your site pointing at your profiles, your profiles pointing back, and a consistent name, address and phone number wherever you appear. These are unglamorous and much easier to fix than earning links.

  • sameAs links in structured data to your official profiles
  • Organisation or LocalBusiness schema naming the entity
  • Phone and address present and machine-readable
  • Visible links to social and review profiles

How to act on the result

  • sameAs is the single most direct statement you can make about who you are. List your Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, Companies House entry and any real social accounts.
  • Name, address and phone must match character for character everywhere. "Ltd" in one place and "Limited" in another is enough to break the match.
  • Do not link to a social profile with no activity on it. An empty profile is a weaker signal than no profile.

Frequently asked

What is sameAs and does it matter?

It is a schema.org property listing other web pages that represent the same entity. It is how you tell a machine that the company on this site, the Google Business Profile, and the LinkedIn page are one organisation rather than three. It costs nothing and it is one of the clearest entity signals available.

Do social media links improve rankings?

Not as links, no, they are almost universally nofollowed. They matter as corroboration. When several independent sources describe the same business with the same details, the entity becomes something a search engine can be confident about, and confidence is what earns you a knowledge panel.

How important is NAP consistency really?

For local search it is one of the highest-return things you can fix, because inconsistency is common and nobody notices it. Every variation of your name, address or phone across directories is a separate weak signal instead of one strong one.

Does this affect whether ChatGPT recommends me?

It helps. Answer engines assemble a picture of a business from whatever they can find and cross-reference, and a site whose identity claims are explicit, structured and consistent is far easier to summarise confidently. If your details contradict each other across the web, the safe move for a model is to recommend someone else.
