What this checks

This counts what a reader actually sees, not the HTML. Script and style blocks are stripped first, which matters because a page built with a heavy page builder can look substantial in the source and be nearly empty on screen.

  • Visible word count with scripts and styles removed
  • Sentence count and average sentence length
  • Paragraph count
  • Estimated reading time

How to act on the result

  • Under 300 words will struggle to rank for anything contested.
  • Length is not a ranking factor. Coverage is. Compare against what already ranks rather than a target number.
  • Average sentences over about 25 words are worth breaking up.

Frequently asked

How many words should a page have?

As many as it takes to answer the search completely. Word-count targets are a proxy that got mistaken for a rule. The useful test is whether you cover what the ranking pages cover, plus something they do not.

Does longer content rank better?

Longer content correlates with better rankings because thorough coverage takes words, not because length itself is rewarded. Padding a page to hit a number achieves nothing.

Why is your count lower than my word processor's?

Because this counts only what renders as visible text. Navigation, footers and script contents are excluded where possible.

Is thin content always a problem?

Not always. A contact page needs very few words. It becomes a problem when a page is competing for a commercial search and says less than everything ranking above it.
