Every time someone pastes your URL into Slack, WhatsApp or LinkedIn, a preview card is generated from your tags. When the image is missing the card is a bare grey box, which measurably reduces clicks.
Usually a missing og:image, or one specified with a relative path. Platforms need an absolute URL and many will not follow a redirect to reach it.
Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter each offer a debugger that forces a re-scrape. Other platforms cache for varying periods with no way to clear it.
It does not have to, and often should not. Your title tag is written for search results. The preview title is written for someone scrolling a feed.
