What this checks

Every free backlink checker on the web is a shop window for a paid product. The numbers are capped, sampled, or months old, because a real backlink index means crawling a large share of the web continuously and storing it, which costs millions a year to run. We are not going to pretend otherwise. This tool tells you exactly where your genuine link data lives, for free, and how to read it.

  • Why link counts differ wildly between tools
  • Where your authoritative free link data actually is
  • Which paid indexes are worth the money and why
  • What we cover in a paid audit that no free tool can

How to act on the result

  • Google Search Console shows the links Google has actually recorded for your site. It is free, it is the only source Google itself stands behind, and most people have never opened it.
  • Ignore any single "authority score". Every vendor computes one differently and none is used by Google.
  • Count referring domains, not links. A thousand links from one site is one relationship.

Frequently asked

Why will this tool not show me my backlinks?

Because we would have to make them up. Backlink data comes from a crawler that has visited a large share of the web and stored what it found. That is what Ahrefs, Semrush and Majestic sell, and it is genuinely expensive to run. A free tool showing you a link count is either sampling a tiny fraction or reselling a capped API. We would rather point you at the free source that is actually authoritative.

Where do I get my real backlink data for free?

Google Search Console, under Links. It shows top linking sites, top linked pages and your most common anchor text, straight from Google. It is a sample rather than an exhaustive list, and it lags by a few days, but it comes from the index that decides your rankings. No third-party tool can say that.

Is Domain Authority a real thing?

It is a real metric, invented and computed by Moz. It is not a Google ranking factor and Google does not see it. The same goes for Ahrefs Domain Rating and Semrush Authority Score. They are useful for comparing two sites in the same tool on the same day, and useless as a target.

How many backlinks do I need?

The question has no number in it. What matters is whether sites your customers would recognise, in your industry or your city, mention you. Ten of those beat ten thousand from directories nobody reads. If a competitor outranks you and your on-page work is done, look at who links to them, and ask what you would have to do or make to earn the same mention.

Do you offer a proper backlink audit?

Yes, as part of a paid audit, where we pull a full referring-domain profile from a licensed index, sort it by whether the link helps or hurts, and hand you a prioritised list. Since that costs us money per report we cannot give it away, but the free tools on this site cover the on-site half properly first, and that is the half you can fix today.
