A small thing that appears in browser tabs, bookmarks, history and some search results. Google shows favicons next to mobile results, so a missing one is a visible gap in a place where you are competing for attention.
Not as a ranking factor. Google displays favicons beside mobile search results, so it affects how your listing looks and plausibly how often it is clicked.
A multiple of 48px. Google requires at least 48x48. Supplying a 512x512 PNG plus an ICO covers every case.
Usually the icon is too small, unreachable, or was crawled before it existed. Google refreshes favicons infrequently, so allow time.
It is a useful fallback for older browsers requesting the root path directly, but an explicit link tag is what modern browsers use.
