What this checks

A low ratio is not a ranking problem in itself. It is a useful smell test: a page that is 95% markup is usually carrying inline styles, a bloated page builder, or a lot of script it does not need.

  • Visible text bytes
  • Total HTML bytes
  • Ratio as a percentage

How to act on the result

  • Below 10% is worth investigating, usually inline CSS or a heavy builder.
  • Move inline styles to an external stylesheet.
  • Ignore the ratio on pages that are legitimately interface rather than content.

Frequently asked

Is text to HTML ratio a ranking factor?

No. Google has never listed it as one and there is no evidence it is used. It is a diagnostic for page bloat.

What is a good ratio?

Anything above about 15% is unremarkable. Below 10% usually points at markup bloat worth cleaning up for speed reasons rather than SEO ones.

How do I improve it?

Reduce the markup rather than adding text. Inline styles, deeply nested wrapper divs and inline SVG are the usual causes.

Does a high ratio help my rankings?

No. Optimising for this number directly is not worth anyone's time.
