Fetching the page…

What this checks

Response headers carry information that never appears in the HTML: caching rules, compression, security policy, server software and indexing directives. When a page behaves oddly and the source looks fine, the answer is usually here.

  • Every response header returned
  • Status line
  • Server and platform identifiers

How to act on the result

  • Look for X-Robots-Tag, which can noindex a page without any HTML tag.
  • Check Cache-Control before diagnosing a speed complaint.
  • Server version headers can be removed to reduce your attack surface.

Frequently asked

Why do headers matter for SEO?

They can control indexing (X-Robots-Tag), caching, compression and redirects. An X-Robots-Tag noindex is invisible in the HTML and removes the page from search entirely.

What is X-Robots-Tag?

A header that does the same job as the meta robots tag. It is commonly used for PDFs and other non-HTML files, and occasionally left on by mistake after a staging deployment.

Should I hide my server version?

It is good practice. It offers attackers a small amount of free reconnaissance and offers you nothing.

Why do I see different headers than my browser shows?

This request comes from our server without cookies or a session. Personalised or logged-in responses can differ.
