What this checks

llms.txt is an emerging convention: a plain-text summary at your domain root describing what your site is and what it contains, for AI tools that look for one. Adoption is early and nobody is obliged to honour it. It also costs almost nothing to add.

  • Whether /llms.txt exists
  • File size and structure
  • Headings and links it contains
  • The full contents

How to act on the result

  • State what your organisation is, who it serves, and who it does not.
  • Link the pages you would want an assistant to cite.
  • Generate it from your real content so it cannot drift out of date.

Frequently asked

What is llms.txt?

A proposed convention for a plain-text file at your domain root that summarises your site for large language models, in the way robots.txt gives instructions to crawlers. It is a community proposal, not a standard any AI company has committed to.

Do AI tools actually read it?

Some do, inconsistently. It is early. The cost of adding one is minutes, which is why it is usually worth doing despite the uncertainty.

What should it contain?

What your organisation is, what it sells, who it suits, and links to your most useful pages. Including who you are not a good fit for is unusual and genuinely helpful to an assistant making a recommendation.

Is it the same as robots.txt?

No. robots.txt controls access. llms.txt offers a summary. They serve different purposes and you want both.
